Obituary for Dorothy A. Egan

Portland – Dorothy A. Egan, 90, of Abby Lane, died peacefully at her home on Wednesday, August 2, 2017.

Born in Portland on March 27, 1927, Dorothy was a daughter of the late William and Gertrude (Tucker) Ramsay. She attended St. Dominic’s School and graduated from Cathedral High School.
Dottie married William E. Nugent, Jr. in 1955 and started a family together in Portland at 25 Sawyer Street. Dottie and Bill shared 15 years of marriage until his untimely death on November 18, 1970. As devastating as this was to the Nugent family, Dottie remained strong for her children’s sake during these tragic circumstances. As a widowed mother, Dottie’s loving devotion and deeply rooted faith gave her the strength to raise her 6 children.

Affectionately known as “Ma Nugent”, Dottie was loving and kind to all of the neighborhood kids. This same loving and nurturing kindness for others was one of her many wonderful characteristics that she was known for throughout her life.

In 1984, Dottie married Francis E. Egan, who was predeceased by his first wife. Dottie and Frank shared many wonderful years together. As difficult as it was for both of them to lose their first spouse, they were happy to have found each other and enjoy each other’s company and love. They shared 30 years of marriage until he predeceased her in 2014.

Dottie was known for her love of baking for her family. If she didn’t have a baked good to give you, she always made sure that she had Oreo’s in the house for any of her visitors. In her later years she was unable to bake, but could be heard giving orders to Jimmy to ensure that there were plenty of goodies in the house.

As “Grammy Dot” and “Mimi”, her grandchildren were the light of her life. She always held each of her grandchildren in the highest regard and supported them no matter what. Dottie was an avid Boston Sports fan all her life, but when her grandson Corey was accepted to West Virginia University, Dottie was proud to support all of WVU sports, especially football and basketball.
She loved her gardens and always had fresh flowers in her house. Dottie was very happy to see all of her family and friends recently on her 90th birthday, and was thrilled that each of them brought flowers which filled every room in her house.

Above all else, Dottie was devoted to her children and grandchildren. In turn, she was a treasure to her family. Dottie will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her daughters, Deborah A. Nugent of Standish, Eileen M. Nugent of Limerick, and Susan E. Willey and husband Richard of Portland; sons, Richard W. Nugent of Limerick, James M. Nugent of Portland and Paul F. Nugent of Portland; grandchildren, Corey E. Willey of Standish and Courtney E. Willey of Portland. Dottie is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
