Obituary for Edna Elizabeth Philbrick

Saco- Edna Elizabeth Philbrick, 102, passed away peacefully on July24, 2018 with her family by her side.

She was born on October 1, 1915 in Biddeford the daughter of the late Charles F. and Frances (Deering) Campbell. She attended schools in Kennebunk and graduated from high school there, and attended Gorham Normal School now the University of Maine.

Carroll was in the aviation business which took them to Mississippi, Texas, and New York, finally returning to Maine permanently in 1967. Wherever they lived, she belonged to music clubs and taught piano in public schools or privately. She is a past president of the Portland Rossini Club and often played piano in concert there. Her favorite was Chopin, but she loved all music genres like John Legend’s “All of Me.”

She was the family genealogist, spending years doing research before the computer age. At one point, says her daughter, the dining room had charts stuck on the walls so intricate that it looked like we were related by every common name in Southern Maine, starting with the Deering’s when they first came here. When she wasn’t doing that, she was writing poetry, prolifically, and many of her poems were published.

Unfortunately, glaucoma took her sight 30 years ago, but she bore it with strength and resolve. Until 2 years ago she was doing her own self care, helping with chores, going out to lunch regularly, and still writing poetry.

Whoever she met, she was truly interested in their lives and they loved her for it. Living as long as she did, she had great historical stories to share.

Many thanks to her caregivers over the years, particularly Jean and Gail of Home Partners, and Carol of Seal Rock who helped her through some emotionally hard times.

The last outing she enjoyed was an outdoor concert where Chopin’s Revolutionary Etude was played. She was impressed by the performance.

She will be so deeply missed says her daughter for her counsel, and concern for us, even though she herself was struggling along. We can’t thank her enough for all she did for us.

Elizabeth was predeceased by her husband, Carroll E. Philbrick; and a sister, Amelia Lanata. She is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth and her husband Robert Wilson of NY, and Gloria and her husband Erik Moline of Biddeford; two sons, John C. and his wife Linda Philbrick of Gorham, and Lloyd and his wife Paula Philbrick of Berwick; eight grandchildren, Laura Fonseca, Daniel Wilson, Renee’ Banwell, Aaron Wilson, Angelique Merold, Clarice Caulfield, Molly Foudriat, and Jill Hanna; ten great grandchildren, Jeremy and Carissa Thiboutot, Jenna and Kara Banwell, Tristen Abbott and Harrison Wilson, Benjamin, Christopher, and Nathan Foudriat, and baby girl Marlowe Hanna; her Lanata and Philbrick nieces and nephews; brother in law, Jesse Philbrick; and friend Melissa Dunn.

At the family’s request all services will be private. Arrangements are under the direction of the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home of South Portland. To view Elizabeth’s memorial page, or to share an online condolence, please visit
