Obituary for Edna H. Beatty

South Portland- Edna H. Beatty, 93, of Fellows Street, died peacefully on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House.

Edna was born in Portland, Maine on September 29, 1924, the daughter of the late John and Helen (Gurski) Krasowski. She attended local schools and graduated from Portland High School in the class of 1941.

Shortly after high school, Edna went to work in the South Portland Shipyard where she was one of several “Rosie the Riveters” who worked building the Liberty Ships. As a welder, because of the limited amount of room in the bow of the ship, Edna’s petite size allowed her the ability to climb into the bow of the ship to place the final weld, a job she held from 1942 to 1946. She was very proud of her work during the war at the shipyard. She worked for a brief time on the Portland waterfront as a fish cutter before going to work at Fairchild Semi-Conductor from 1963 to 1972, she then became a full time homemaker.

On June 23, 1948, she married the love of her life John C. Beatty Sr. at St. Louis Church in Portland.

Edna was an avid reader of murder mysteries, loved animals especially dogs. She enjoyed the time she spent surrounded by her extended Irish family and spending time and talking with her sisters. She was an active member of the St. Dominic’s Mothers Club, and an avid fund raiser for the March of Dimes. Edna enjoyed traveling and enjoyed all sports including the Bruins, Red Sox and the New England Patriots especially her “Gronski”. As matriarch of the Beatty family, Edna was always entertaining family and was a strong promoter of her children and grandchildren pursuing higher education. Edna was a special person to her family, they described her as a comedian, love bug, intelligent, kind, silly sense of humor, cute, and beautiful inside and out.

Edna was predeceased by her husband John C. Beatty Sr.; two sisters, Mary Strom and Clara Hopkins; a brother Joseph Krasowski Jr. She is survived by two daughters Jacqueline Beatty of Scarborough, and Catherine and her husband David Levasseur of South Portland; three sons, John and Sally Beatty of Old Orchard Beach, Brian Beatty of South Portland, and Steven and Patricia Beatty of Natick, MA; five grandchildren Michael Beatty, Megan (Beatty) Fallon, Misha Beatty, Connor Beatty, and Rebecca Beatty; six great grandchildren, Mark Beatty, Luke Beatty, Shea Beatty, Jackson Fallon, Fiona Fallon, and Winifred Fallon; beloved sister in law, Catherine Goddard of Portland; and numerous nieces and nephews.
