Obituary for Elizabeth Gomes

PORTLAND - Elizabeth O’Brien Currier Gomes, daughter of Martin Raymond and Teresa (Connolly) O’Brien, passed away peacefully at her home, on February 26, 2018 with her family by her side.

She was born in Glens Falls, N.Y. where she attended St. Mary’s Academy and Katharine Gibbs College. Betty was a legal secretary and did some modeling.

In 1954, she was married to Bernard P. Currier. When Bernard became President of St. Joseph’s College, Betty worked in the office and became a strong advocate for the college. Bernard predeceased her in 1978.

Betty was married to Edmund B. Gomes, Sr. in 1980. He predeceased her in 2009. She and Ed enjoyed exploring, traveling and spending summers on Great Diamond Island. They also volunteered at the Barron Center and for various charities and committees.

Betty enjoyed knitting and donated blankets, mittens and hats for babies and children at Mercy Hospital. She also loved reading, gardening, painting, sewing, decorating, collecting sea glass, and spending time at the ocean and lake. She usually started her day by riding her stationary bike while praying the Rosary. At the end of the day, she watched the sunset. She was a very competitive Scrabble player and enjoyed the company of family and friends as well as her loyal canine companion, Nedford.

Betty was a communicant of St. Joseph’s Church. Throughout her life, her faith was a source of strength and comfort.

She will be fondly remembered for her honesty, kindness and intellect.

Betty was predeceased by her brothers Robert J. O’Brien, Thomas P. O’ Brien, and M. Raymond O’Brien and sister Mary Marcantonio and step-granddaughter, Crystal M. Gomes.

She was survived by her son, Paul B. Currier, daughter, Clare Currier-Bolduc, stepson Edmund B. Gomes, Jr. (wife, Joan), stepson Joseph Gomes (children, Rachel, David and Neal) and stepdaughter, Jeanne G. Fenton ( husband, Jim and children, Gabriella and Jimmy). She was also survived by her brother Richard W. O’Brien (wife Sally) and sister, Kay Sweeney (husband Dan), sister-in-law Mary O’Brien, ,as well as many nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews.

Visiting Hours celebrating Betty’s life will be held on Sunday, March 4 from 2-4PM at the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland. Prayers will be recited at the funeral home on Monday, March 5 at 10:15AM followed by a 11AM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph’s Church, 673 Stevens Ave, Portland.
