Obituary for James W. Berryman

South Portland- James W. Berryman, 85, of South Portland, died peacefully on Tuesday, March 6, 2018, at the Maine Veterans Home, surrounded by his loving family.

James was born in South Portland on March 5, 1933, the son of the late Lewis J. and Mildred A. (Davis) Berryman. He graduated from South Portland High School in the class of 1951. Following high school, James enlisted and served in the United States Army during the Korean War.

On January 10, 1953, James married, the love of his life, Constance A. Swenson in South Portland where they continued to make their home and raise a family.

James worked for Bliss Portland, formerly Portland Copper, for twenty years and then worked for another twenty one years with Hallamore. James retired in 1988.

In his spare time, James enjoyed fishing, could build anything with wood, reading, helping others, playing on his computer and surfing the net. His greatest love was the time he spent surrounded by his family and close friends. He was a lifelong member of the former First Methodist Church, Browns Hill, and the South Portland American Legion Post #35. James family will remember him as a true family man who exemplified the word unselfish.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff, nurses, and doctors at the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough, for the love and care shown to James during his stay with them.

James was predeceased by a sister Clara Townsend. He is survived by his wife of sixty five years, Constance Berryman of South Portland; a daughter, Charlene and her husband Vincent Maietta of South Portland; three sons, Richard and his wife Wendy Berryman of NH, James and his wife Sherry Berryman of South Portland, and Steven and his wife Bridget Berryman of Scarborough; three grandchildren, Jaime Berryman of MA, Tracy Burton of NH, and Hunter Lynch of Scarborough; two great grandchildren, Emma and Logan Burton of NH; a niece, Carolyn Butterfield of Berwick; a nephew, Bill Townsend of Wells.
