Obituary for Mary Virginia Lunt

Portland – Mary Virginia Lunt, 98, of 75 State Street, passed peacefully on Tuesday, April 03, 2018.

Mary (Nana) would tell all “I had the best life - no regrets!” Her family was her everything - especially her daughter, 3 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren!

Mary was born in Portland on May 15, 1919, and lived her 98 years in the greater Portland area, a daughter of the late John and Rosanna (Gladu) Nicholas. She was raised on a farm in Cumberland with her 7 brothers - Louie, John, Frank, Jim, Parker, Leon, and Fred. She often shared her fond memories of Maine summers spent together as a family on Thompson Pond. Growing up, her mother Rose Anna was the light of her life.

She grew up in Portland - graduated from Portland High School - and was very proud of her honors at the University of Maine. Mary worked for the US Navy and US Coast Guard as a Civil Service Employee. She worked her way up to the Head of the Loan Department at Canal Bank and raised her daughter Rosemary with George in Portland.

She loved to talk about her grandkids and great-grandkids! Life was complete attending all her great-grandchildren’s events. Holidays with family were filled with love, smiles, and laughter. Shopping was a joy to her - from Porteous to Talbots to Macy’s. Fried clams, cribbage, walks on the Boulevard and Deering Oaks, searching for sun in the backyard, dancing in her younger years, Peaks Island and Cambridge (MA) trips, eating candy, and her place at 75 State Street, were just a few of the things she loved.

She will be remembered gently smiling saying ‘I love you’ to those closest to her.

She was predeceased by her husbands, George Thompson and Walter Lunt. She is survived by her daughter, Rosemary Rainsford and son-in-law, Richard Rainsford; grandchildren, Travis (Jane) Rainsford, Troy (Heather) Rainsford, Tamara (Josh) Krieger; great-grandchildren, Clayton, Preston, Jackson, Emma, and Taylor; and many wonderful nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial and celebration of Nana’s life will be held at 12:00PM, on Monday, April 9, 2018, at St. Joseph’s Church, 673 Stevens Ave, Portland. Burial will be held at a later time.

Memorial contributions may be made in Nana’s memory to St. Brigid School, 695 Stevens Avenue, Portland, Maine 04103.
