Obituary for Stephen M. Carmody

Scarborough – Stephen Marshall Carmody, 68, formerly of South Portland, died suddenly early Thursday morning on February 22, 2018, of complications from a long term illness.

He was the second of six children born to Thomas J. and Alice L. Carmody, long term residents of So. Portland. Stephen enjoyed a happy childhood, attending the local schools and graduating from South Portland High School in 1967. He attended the University of Maine in Orono and graduated from SMVTI with a degree in Marine Science. As a young man, Stephen was active in sports, played the violin, and built a small sailboat in which he enjoyed exploring Casco Bay.

Stephen was a scholar and prolific reader whose library consisted of hundreds of book on many topics including advanced math, sciences, the arts and a large collection of dictionaries. He enjoyed cooking, painting, drawing, photography and he was a competitive chess player.
Despite the many challenges which confronted Stephen during his adult life, he handled them with grace and dignity. He was compassionate towards others and generous with whatever he had. Stephen was especially sensitive to the needs of those with severe mental health problems.

Stephen was a man of faith which sustained him through difficult times in his life.

He was predeceased by his parents and he is survived by five siblings; David and his wife Beth of Scarborough, Margaret Carmody of South Portland, Elizabeth Lemiska and her husband Brian of Kensington, CT, Thomas Carmody and his wife Kim of Wilkes Barre, PA, Maureen Parker and her husband Denis of Duncanville, TX. He is also survived by numerous nephews, nieces and many loyal friends.

Stephen’s gift of organ donation will live on through those who benefitted from his generosity.
The family would like to thank the staff at Pine Point Center for their care and support during his stay.

Visitation and a small reception celebrating Stephen’s life will be held from 9:30AM to 10:30AM on Friday, Mar. 2, 2018, at the Conroy-Tully Walker South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland, followed by an 11AM Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Cross Church, 124 Cottage Road, South Portland.
