Obituary for Wendell E. Green

South Portland- Wendell E. Green, 95, of Chapel Street, died peacefully on Saturday, April 28, 2018, at the Maine Veterans’ Home in Scarborough.

Wendell was born in Manchester, New Hampshire on June 4, 1922, the son of the late George L. and Lucy (Adams) Green. He served in the United States Navy during World War II on the USS Hymand.

On October 13, 1944, Wendell married the love his life in South Portland , Catherine I. Smith. Together they made their home and raised a family in South Portland.

Wendell spent his entire working career as truck driver working more than 40 years for various companies including Yellow Freight, M&M Trucking, McCarthy Transportation, and Hannaford Supermarkets. When not driving truck, Wendell loved to spend time in the outdoors hunting and fishing. He had a passion for playing golf, and made local history by scoring two holes-in-one on the same day at the Larry Rose Golf Course in South Portland. His greatest love was the time he spent surrounded by his family and friends.

Wendell was predeceased by his wife Catherine I. Green on August 8, 1993; four brothers, Thomas, Frederick, Ralph, and George Green; two sisters, Lucy Green and Izora Gould. He is survived by two sons, Charles Green and his wife Marie of Scarborough, James Green and his wife Cynthia of South Portland; a daughter, Kathleen Grosvenor and her husband David of Arizona; one brother, Donald Green of Gorham ; a sister, Marilyn Wellington of South Portland; four grandchildren, Lisa O’Brien, Jason Green, James Green, and Angela Green; seven great grandchildren, Connor O’Brien, Liam O’Brien, Finnegan Green-Paquette, Isiah Green, Skylar Green, Christopher Green, and Trey Green; several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hour and celebration of Wendell’s life will be held on Wednesday, May 2, 2018, from 10:00am to 11:00am at the Conroy-Tully Walker South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. A funeral service will follow at 11:00am at the Chapel. Burial with military honors, will be at Brooklawn Memorial Park, 2002 Congress Street, Portland .
