WINDHAM - John Patrick Malia, 84, of Roosevelt Trail, died following a brief illness, Wednesday, February 13, 2013, at Maine Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Portland on August 31, 1928, a son of Martin and Mary (McCafferty) Malia. He attended South Portland schools. He married Virginia Richards on May 16, 1953, at St. Mary's Church in Westbrook. John was a resident of Daytona Beach, Florida, and maintained a second home in Windham. He worked for Maine Central Railroad, Canadian National, and the Grand Trunk Railroad and retired in 1989. He was a board certified electrician and Jack of All Trades. Many can attest to his willingness to help others with any job, big or small. He was especially proud of his work for the Sisters of Mercy in Portland. He was a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus and an active member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Windham. He is predeceased by a brother, George Malia. He is survived by his cherished wife of 59 years, Virginia; three daughters, Catherine Malia Roak of Portland, Elizabeth Purington and her husband Wayne of Windham, and Margaret Kneeland and her husband Robert of Windham; a son, Peter Malia and his fianc(c)e Elizabeth Staples Brown of Standish; three sisters; Helen Malia Scott, Mary Perry and her husband Charles, and Margaret Eckert and her husband John; four brothers, Daniel Malia and his wife Gladys, Martin Malia, James Malia and his wife Barbara, and Richard Malia and his wife Patricia; and eleven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. John's family wishes to thank the amazing caregivers at Maine Medical Center CICU for their professionalism and loving care provided to John. Visiting hours will be held 4:00 - 7:00 pm, Monday, at Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 am, Tuesday, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 919 Roosevelt Trail, Windham. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, South Portland.
