PORTLAND - John W. Sullivan, 75, of Portland, passed away on Saturday, November 23, 2013. John, or as his family called him, Jack, was born on February 7, 1938, son of the late John H. and Louise (Hinds) Sullivan. He graduated from Cheverus High School in 1956 and from Fairfield University in Connecticut in 1960. He served in the Air National Guard, was a member of the Portland Jaycees, and was chairman of the Building Committee for the construction of Deering Pavilion. A long time parishioner of St. Patrick's Church in Portland, he served as president of the school board for several years. A former vice president of Maine Insurance Company, Jack retired in 2010 after serving for 33 years as a claims adjudicator for the State of Maine Department of Disability Determination. John was predeceased by his son John M. Sullivan in 1992. He is survived by his loving wife Phillis (Brown) Sullivan of Portland; daughters Lynne E. Sullivan of Newton, MA and Mary T. Sullivan of Portland; his four sisters of Portland: Mary Lou Somers, Anne S. Ingraham, Janet S. McKane, and Catherine R. Sullivan; five nephews, a niece, and several grand nephews and nieces. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at The Cedars Nursing Center for the wonderful care John received. Visiting hours will be Tuesday, November 26 from 3:00-8:00 p.m. at the Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway in South Portland. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Wednesday, November 27 at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church on Mellon Street in Portland.
